Cabin Fever - 1/00
The bitter cold temperatures on the weekend of January 15-16 didn't stop Troop 75's annual Cabin Fever event from taking place at Baiting Hollow's Greenwood Cabin. A troop tradition since 1995, this cabin-camping event is designed to introduce local Webelos to the Troop 75 program as a way of helping them to decide what boy scout troop they will ultimately join. This year's Cub turnout (only seven) was smaller than we've seen in past years because of the cold, but those who did attend had a great time and had no problem keeping warm.
The Webelos learned a lot about boy scouting through a variety of activities and demonstrations put on by our patrols. Map and compass, tent-pitching, and cooking were among the skills introduced to the Webelos during the day. With temperatures remaining in the teens, the program was run in such an order so that the Webelos did not spend any prolonged periods outside the cabin. The Cubs were kept busy inside with such activities as learning how to orient a map and looking at troop pictures from last summer's trip to Philmont.
For dinner, the Webelos ate with the patrols as our patrol leaders showed off their expert outdoor cooking skills. The Coyotes and Bengals made steak and chicken parmasean while the Dragons had beef stew. Chocolate cake and pineapple-upside-down cake, both cooked in a dutch oven by our Scouts, were on the menu for dessert. All came out delicious! The adults (Webelo parents and troop leaders) enjoyed a Thanksgiving-style dinner complete with turkey (cooked in a garbage can), sweet potatoes, and stuffing. The weather forced our evening campfire program into the cabin, where the Webelos enjoyed the traditional Troop 75 skits and also put on a few new ones of their own. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening and weekend.
The weekend would not have been possible without Mr. Mike Severino, who organized the event and has done so since we started doing Cabin Fever five years ago. Unfortunately, Mike did not feel well on Saturday and could not remain for the weekend. Scoutmaster Mike Buono ran the remainer of the event with the help of assistants Steve Johnston and Chris Boundy. Thanks also to Mr. McDermott, who joined the troop Friday night to fulfill the two-adult minimum, as well as Mr. Cubbon and Mr. Schantz for taking their time out to drive with last-minute notice.
